Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses how the concept and the phenomenon of postmodernism may be interpreted and used by critical scientists of culture for the development of the theory of ideological dominance and cultural change. The concept itself may take various meanings and be understood as a new current in art, a tendency in culture-related processes and phenomena or the cultural logic of late capitalism. The first part deals with the difficulties in defining a rigorous theoretical framework for the analysis of interdependencies between the so-called postmodernism and the critical theory. It will also discuss the ambiguous and multidimensional nature of the concept and the phenomenon of postmodernism. Despite these difficulties, critical researchers tend to refer to postmodernism to name the crucial cultural change which, in their opinion, is induced by the evolution of capitalist economy. That is why the second part of the paper presents the interpretation of postmodernism as the culture of the flexible accumulation stage. It ends with the reflections on the prospective evolution of the critical theory in the light of “postmodernist critique without critics.”
