Summary/Abstract: The education systems in capitalist democracies have undergone relatively intensive transformations in the 1980s. These changes resulted mainly from the growing dominance of neoliberal ideology. The central role in the education system has been taken on by so-called business model of education and the New Management. This has brought several negative consequences; teaching of technology-related values, rationality and bureaucracy have superseded education in humanistic values. At the same time, education systems are not adapted to follow technological and communication developments in the society and do not offer education that would prepare young people for the risk of uncertainty, omnipresent in the modern world. Education systems are not ready for such challenges. Representatives of critical social theory present various proposals of changes to be introduced in the systems in order for them to keep up with such modern challenges. This paper presents the proposals of Douglas Kellner, Peter Wexler, Keith Morrison and Michael W. Apple.
