Summary/Abstract: A bibliographic activity conducted in exile constitutes one of the most important elements of the academic output of Poles living abroad. This type of information tools was prepared by magazine editors, librarians and historians. Also, Jan Kowalik (28.08.1910 — 12.02.2001) wanted to document a cultural and academic output. This founder of many immigration magazines, a journalist, collector of Polish periodicals published in several dozen countries, a researcher of periodical press, an archivist and, finally, a bibliographer is the author of a series of documentation works, especially important for recreation of the history of the functioning of Poles abroad. Thus, a subject-chronological order presents bibliographies devoted to the image of Poland in Germany (e.g. Polonica niemieckie za czas od 1 września 1939 do 31 grudnia 1948 roku, Paris 1952, Polska w bibliografii niemieckiej 1954—1956 oraz uzupełnienia do okresu 1945—1953, Paris 1958, with Władysław Chojnacki Bibliografia niemieckich bibliografii dotyczących Polski 1900—1958, Poznań 1960), bibliographies of the bibliography of the Polish diaspora (e.g. Bibliografia bibliografii. In: Literatura polska na obczyźnie 1940—1960, Vol. 2. A joint publication edited by T. Terlecki. London 1965, pp. 645—680), bibliographies of the immigration press (e.g. Materiały do historii prasy polskiej na obczyźnie: 1939—1962, Vol. 1. Bibliografie. Paryż 1963; Bibliografia czasopism polskich wydanych poza granicami Kraju od września 1939 roku. Lublin 1976—1988, Vol. 1—5) and personal bibliographies. The subject-matter of bibliography, its structure, ways of gathering the materials, as well as an informative and documentary role they have played, illustrating a social, cultural and academic life of Poles living abroad.
