Summary/Abstract: Towarzystwo Czytelń Ludowych played an important role in the history of Polish librarianship. Founded in 1880 in Poznań, it functioned officially since 1945. The organizational structure was created by Centralne Biuro in Poznań, where the books and terrain offices to which the literature was provided and from which the books were delivered to county and district committees. The work of Towarzystwo Czytelń Ludowych was based on statutes, according to which the most important aim was to found folk libraries and a systematic choice of the appropriate literature, mainly of a Christian nature. Towarzystwo Czytelń Ludowych was most developed between 1922 and 1939. It founded libraries, organized reading rooms, cooperated with local population when promoting the Polish book. Actively supported by a cultural-educational work, it could count on the engagement of priests, bishops, as well as members of associations and church brotherhoods. A Silesian society had confidence in church that is why it willingly participated in all enterprises of a cultural life which was organized by priests and other people involved in church structures.
