Summary/Abstract: The resumption of shipping on the Danube free of Turkish control was of prime importance for the development of the Danubian ports and of new commercial centers like Călăraşi. The 1851 project by Scarlat Popovici was the first town planning regulation for Călăraşi. Popovici suggested rectangular building areas enclosing an equal surface. The 1875 project was an extension of this first project. New building laws were enacted, regulating matters like control of urban growth, organization of street pattern, lighting and sewerage.
