Summary/Abstract: The article presents the changes in the level of disparities of countries and regions as regards per capita . It shows theoretical and empirical examples of two-way influence of integration on cohesion processes as well as examines the processes of regional convergences in Poland in 1999-2008 using classical and alternative methods. The results indicate that the differences in the level of development of regions (measured by GDP per capita) did not decrease and there was a small tendency to divergence. As a result there were convergence processes on the country level (as part of the EU) and divergence processes on the regional level. The study also shows a correlation between the diversification of development and business cycle – higher economic growth accompanied higher indications of diversification of development.
