Summary/Abstract: Vladimir Nabokov and Paul Auster both employ the principle of chance in their work. The paper will discuss the narrative strategies in Lolita and The New York Trilogy, where chance operates as a means of expressing necessity (Bakhtin) and as a device for reworking the detective novel genre.
