Summary/Abstract: Baum’s Oz has both thrilled and puzzled generations since the publication of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. The paper will explore the utopian/ dystopian connotations of Emerald City and Oz in connection with rock poetry, with Elton John’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and Scissor Sisters’ ‘Return to Oz’ chosen as examples of pop-culture’s continuing fascination with Baum’s flawed paradise.
