Summary/Abstract: This article is proposed to give homage to the work of Andres Bello, a prominent politician and diplomat of the case of the Latin American Independence and at the same time author of several literary, philological and grammatical works. Through the review of his most important philological works it becomes apparent that in the work of this real multifaceted humanist, the study of the language occupied such an important place that he can be considered the first researcher of this field in the independent Latin America. Even though his linguistic activity is submitted to a political ideal, thanks to its systematicity and intuition, it has had a strong influence even on modern linguistics.
