Summary/Abstract: The article expounds the concept song tradition in decline as one of the possible factors for activating the variability of songs. Variations occur because of the attempts "to recall" a song, when its functional characteristic is deleted and the artistic element dominates the utilitarian. The author examines different variants of a given song (on materials from three villages in the Strandzha Mountain) in order to gain information about the stability of the musical components in the performers' minds. The detailed comparative analyses reveal the stability of the rhythm and the direction of the musical movement, as well as the labiality of the mode and the melodic component of the song structure.
