Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the research interests of the researchers from the Department of Folk Music, Institute of Music/Institute of Musicology, BAS, in the traditional music of the ethnic groups in Bulgaria, encompassing the period since the department has been established until the Institute was incorporated. On the basis of material kept at the Music Archive and the Scientific Archives of BAS as well as fundamental publications by researchers from the department it is shown that in that period under socialism with the latter’s incoherent policy towards the minorities, respective fieldwork and theoretical research has been conducted receiving institutional support to a greater or lesser degree, excluding the end of the period. The research interest in the music of minorities is presented in the paper through publications on the traditional music of the ethnic Jews, Turks, and Aromanians with these publications been interpreted in the context of their inclusion in more general ethnomusicological theories and/or comparative and historical studies. By using unknown to this day records light is shed also on fieldwork with Gypsies and Karakachans/Sarakatsans. At the end of the paper, attention is drawn to the reasons for the interest of the researchers that has remained marginal due to the research exigencies of that time.
