Problems posed by the translation of the novel Libro de Manuel by Julio Cortázar into Romaninan and French

Summary/Abstract: Any reader acquainted with the Argentinean writer’s linguistic games is well aware of the fact that Julio Cortázar always puts his translators through the mill. The difficulties lie in using invented words, or foreign words (sometimes sentences) which are transcribed according to the Spanish pronunciation rules. One of the most important problems relates to the translation of the noun ‘joda’, the name of the protest movement of Cortázar’s ‘militants’. In addition to all this, there are the words written in ‘lunfardo’ and the press clippings that lack their margin, so that the words remain truncated.
