Summary/Abstract: Lately, common obstacles in the progress of learners have been the inconsistency of the educational system and its staff policy. Also, the lack of support for the facilitation of teaching in under-resourced contexts could not be counterbalanced by the teachers’ flexibility, professional conduct, and persistence. As a consequence of teachers’ leaving the system, the demand for qualified teachers outstripped the number of qualified professionals. The negative impact of these circumstances on the foreign language learners has become visible in higher education, too, even though the students have the same positive attitude to language learning, willingness to learn English and awareness of the need to belong to a community that still uses English as lingua franca. In addition, it is generally accepted that high teacher mobility and successful teaching are mutually exclusive. The rationale of writing this paper is the examination of the situation from the perspective of 1st year technical students, insisting on the causes of the decline of their level of linguistic competence, their expectations regarding the English classes and the strategy to apply in order to ensure their progress.
