Summary/Abstract: The author of the paper presents several patterns of the snake symbol as they have existed throughout human history. They have been enumerated as follows: the Indian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Biblical notions. The research puts the emphasis on the multifarious aspects of these patterns in the novella of J. „ Conrad "The Heart of Darkness ". The implications are various and they show the new ideas expressed by the writer. The author of the article dwells on some illustrations of the models taken from the world history. The task is not to involve the reader in the entanglement of the details but to reveal the basic trends of the relationship "power - subjects" from historical, mythological, and literary points of view related to the concepts of' J. Conrad.
