Summary/Abstract: The article overviews the history of the military prison in Kaunas. Specifically, attention is given to the purpose and factors for the establishment of the prison, its structure and particularities of the work. The only military prison of Lithuania was opened in the 6th Fort of Kaunas. It belonged to the army and was functioning not only as the penitentiary office, but also as a military organization and a regular unit. Occasionally, apart from the soldiers, who were investigated and isolated for short and long-term periods, civilians were also imprisoned. The soldiers were learning to read and write, studying military statutes, and carrying out various military and work duties. The territory of the 6th Fort and its surroundings also served as a place of execution for shooting people sentenced to death.
