Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the history of studying of women in the institutes of higher education of the Russian empire. The author examines the reasons and conditions of appearance of women’s higher courses, special girls’ institutes etc. in Russia. The paper analyzes in detail aspirations of Russian women for the university education despite functioning of the women’s higher courses and women’s institutes in the country.
