Summary/Abstract: The European interpretation of individual freedom can be approached in many ways and with the use of various methods. The paradigm of our present thinking on freedom is determined by the autarchic conception of freedom, as well as by the great philosophical tradition of modernity. There is, however, another strand of Western philosophy related to freedom, which does not conceive it in terms of acting, but rather as a kind of personal meditation, which must not necessarily lead to any positive action. This ’inner’ type freedom is not restricted to Oriental philosophies, centred upon the extinguishment of conscience in the state of nirvana, but on personal freedom which remains a fact of conscience and reason still situated within the confines of our world.
