Summary/Abstract: The present paper investigates the connections between metacognitive and autonomous language learning from the perspective of learning and teaching strategies. Starting from a theoretical background that attempts to establish some guidelines as far as metacognition is concerned, the paper progresses towards explaining how appropriate knowledge and use of metacognitive strategies may empower language learners up to the point of making them autonomous in their learning process. The paper also addresses the issue of the extent to which learning strategies can be taught and makes some recommendations to language teachers who choose to integrate these methods into their teaching routine.
