Summary/Abstract: The corpus for the comparative study of the French and Romanian prisons. Methodological challenges. Our research proposes to en large on a three-way analysis. We shall analyse the concept of corpus in the comparative study of prison-related environment and shall describe the elements contributing to understanding how the prison-related discourse is put into practice. Stress will be laid upon the constraints such a research entails, upon the perspectives exploitable depending on the difficulties encountered in order to have access into a “total institution” (Goffman 1968 : 41). Aiming at an empirical and comparative approach of the problem, we shall present the detainee as a subject-speaker expressing his discourse-related identity and as a social actor gradually acquainting himself to his experience as an offender, the experience and the existence in confinement.
