Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate some coping strategies of small Bulgarian farmers relating to the process of integration into the EU. Four case studies, representing two major coping strategies, are contrasted. The first one, which has been more successful during the last decades, is based on diversification of mutually reinforcing activities and balance of risks. The second one is focused on specialisation, and seems to be privileged during the accession process by the increasing complexity of hygienic and sanitary regulations regarding the food production and the bureaucratic procedures related to the agricultural subsidies.
