Rural Specialists on Tradition: Erudite People, Old Men, and Dissidents

Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the procedure of reconstruction of a ritual in a Bulgarian village. The ritual called ,,calus" had disappeared in 1930 and resuscitated in 1960 as a symbol of village tradition, past and memory. The article analyzes the debates among different groups in the village trying to establish their right on interpreting the ritual; we argue that there is a relative consensus on the procedure of reconstruction and bitter arguments on interpretation
