BOOK PRINTED IN RAMNIC IN THE COLLECTION OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF UNION. TYPES OF DETERIORATIONS AND RESTORATION TREATMENTS APPLIED ON A HOROLOGION

Summary/Abstract: Beyond the spiritual message sent by their content, old Romanian books remark through their external beauty, care shown to binding and quality of paper. Unfortunately, their great majority underwent numerous degradations, both from internal causes generated by organic nature of support material, and external causes determined by the environment, under the circumstances of exceeding optimal limits of pollution, microbiological activity but also careless usage. In this case of the Horologion, restoration process began only after all conditions were prepared, after investigations were made, the restoration record was compiled, determination of degradation type, diagnosis, establishing treatments, methods and materials used, after necessary photos were taken and their validation was performed by the appointed restoration committee. Restoration treatments involved: disinfection, dry mechanical cleaning, washing, con-solidation with Japanese veil of the deteriorated parts, filling of the gaps with Japanese paper, elimination of the veil and Japanese paper excess, pressing.
