DIN CE LIMBĂ S-A TRADUS ISTORIA LUI SCHINDER?
FROM WHAT LANGUAGE IS TRANSLATED SCHINDER’S STORY?

Summary/Abstract: The problem of establishing from what language Schinder’s Story was made (ante 1791) has not been solved up to now. Some authors have opinated it was a translation from the Turkish (M. Gaster, Ioan C. Chiţimia) – this hypothesis is considered donbtful by Al. Piru –, other researchers have considered it was a translation from the Greek (M. Anghelescu). We resume the examination of this problem, and notice the presence in the text of numerons words of Turkish origin: caiefit „luxury”, cărăvan „carrier”, băcan „grocer”, buccealâc „package of clothes and linem the bride gives to the groom”, chioşchiu „kiosk, pavillion”, ciohodar „carrier”, cube „cupola”, hac „pay, salary”, hal „bod state”, hazna „treasury”, meterhanea „military music group”, nagara „a kird of drum”, panget „stone used aganst poisson”, schelă „customs point”, tingire „pan” etc. The great number of such words of Turkish origin is a strong argument in favour of the text’s having been translated from the Turkish. Consequently, Schinder’s Story is the first translation from the Turkish into Romanian of a litery work.
