Empirical Literary Studies: A Line of Literary Research and Scholarly Method

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the establishment and activities of the Empirical Literary Studies, which has evolved in Germany around Siegfried J. Schmidt and was active in the 1980s. This school elaborated a thoroughly new model of literary study, drewing both in its methodological assumptions and theoretical setup upon patterns of the empirical sciences – linguistics, cybernetics and systems theory. These methodologies provide the context for describing the basic assumptions for Radical Constructivism – the current in the philosophy of knowledge that has exerted a marked influence on the school’s development and its endeavours.
