Summary/Abstract: In connection with the centenary of the publication of Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, a particularly topical issue is that of the nature of this celebrated study. Its author had not yet defined himself as a socio-logist and did not explicitly point out the code (the title) of the viewpoint that he was forming and following. The author of this article consistently argues that Weber’s perspective was not that of economic science (economics) or of theology, anthropology, philosophy of history, cultural science, etc. The perspective was not inter-disciplinary or multidisciplinary, but sociological. However, this is a kind of sociology essentially different from the familiar ones of Weber’s time and from the sociological paradigms that would emerge later. In conclusion, it is pointed out in the article that the most important lesson to be learned from The Protestant Ethic…, a true gem among the classical works of sociology, involves the question of how one thinks sociologically.
