Shifts in the Teachers' Career in the Context of Social Transformations

Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the 21st century, due to intensive technological development, the world has been experiencing deep political and social transformations which change the environment and the mode of activities. The latter causes the new requirement for a person: he / she has to know, how to act efficiently in a changing situation and to take an individual responsibility for his / her own career. Nowadays the teacher working in the changing world undergoes the same shifts and meets the same challenges as any other occupation; therefore the changes and the alternations of existence parameters are also characteristic of his career. The changing education and labour market opportunities are very important to the career, its planning and changes. Teachers should realize that improvement first of all means the acknowledgement and management of the continuously appearing forces of changes. The career issue is not new in the sphere of science, but teachers' career shifts have not been much analyzed and are very topical. In order to disclose the change tendencies of career circumstances and conception, it is important to assess the cause of this shift - the social transformations taking place all aver the world. Analyzing the teachers' views on the factors determining the success of the career, the following characteristic changes of the success emerged: thorough personai development, self realization, successful life and opportunity to express their creativity. Reviewing the results of the search we can influence of the shifts in the educational system on the teachers' career. The changes promote the teachers' flexibility, innovation; enhance the adaptability to and observation of the environment. The changes of the career envisage newfunctions of the teacher, such as: supervisor of the changes, moderator, researcher, conveyer of the information, manager, social educator, leader and etc. Only an integral personality with social, pedagogical and professional competence can carry out these new duries. In Lithuania the tendencies of the changes of the teachers' career led to the conclusion that teachers today are interested in the possibilities of their professional development, leadership and self-expression. More and more teachers understand that, if necessary, they can be made to change not only the working place and speciality but the profession, too. The teachers are to shift the profile of their specialization. They are able to deal with the issues of reconstruction, management, syllabus ant the assessment of schoolchildren's achievements.
