Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the stability and competitiveness level of the Bulgarian economy at present. Statistical data assign the last place of Bulgaria by stable development amongst the Central and East European countries. The competitiveness is a fundamental total index for the economic power of every country generalizing the effectiveness of its economic, social, financial, institutional and other subsystem’s functioning. The macroeconomic competitiveness indicator classifies Bulgaria at the 75th place, while not only the developed and medium-developed countries, but also about 25 of the underdeveloped countries are placed ahead of us. Among the countries – members and candidates for the EU membership our economy is also at the last place lagging at considerable distance behind Romania (56) and Turkey (52). The analyses carried out makes it possible to conclude that at present the Bulgarian economy does not meet the European criteria and standards by the “stable development” and “competitiveness” indices and is at the last quarter of the world and at the end of the European rank lists. Therefore, long time and big efforts are necessary on the way of our country’s overtaking development.
