Summary/Abstract: Since December 1989, Romania has constantly and coherently carried out a policy meant to generally strengthen the relationship with the Occident and particularly with the USA and European Union. Romania has proved to be a trustful partner of the allies in the first war in the Gulf and especially during the presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations. Romania has also played an active part within the peace keeping operations in Afghanistan, UNAVEM IN Angola, IFOR/SFOR in Bosnia, KFOR and EULEX in Kosovo and Albania. Romania is an OSCE member and was even a president of this organization in 2001. All these external missions and theatres of operations have been defined by a complexity of the military-political, social, economic situation and by a cultural, ethnical and religious diversity that requires a huge intercultural communication ability.
