Summary/Abstract: The author begins by addressing the term ‘terrorism’ from a theoretical perspective, examining its etymology and its use in classical and modern political theory. He then discusses the external and internal factors that have given rise to terrorism in the history of mankind to date, considering the events of 11 September in the USA and elsewhere, and concluding with the issue of the extent to which the terrorist attacks on the USA were provoked by US policy and that of its allies towards Israel and towards the Muslim world as a whole.
