CONTEMPORARY BIOETHICS: DEFINITIONS, PRINCIPLES AND FUNDAMENTS

Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Bioethics: Definitions, Principles and Fundaments. Due of the extraordinary advances of science and technology on life, for the first time in history, the man begins to take control of biological processes. Bioethics makes an ethical analysis of the consequences of these developments in people’s lives. It appears a new and wide range of interdisciplinary reflection where they meet biology, medicine, philosophy, law, theology, economics, psychology, ecology. Besides reflecting and questioning upon the problems brought by the biotechnology, we are also called to decide which are the best practices, available today, considered to be ethical, lawful and possible on the area of the legislative intervention. The first problem that arises is to identify who should decide. It is clear that doctors can not be allowed to do whatever it is, technically, possible to change technological processes. But when it comes to determine what it is from ethically point of view, legitimate or acceptable, the political will may be receptive to different positions and therefore to provide different solutions on the same issues according to the cultural orientation prevalent in different countries at a particular historical moment. In this article we present some cases which gave rise to bioethical reflection type, creating extensive discussion and led to bioethical and legal repercussions.
