Summary/Abstract: Two years ago, Günter Grass admitted that he had been an SS unit member during the Second World War, a late admission that gave rise to a lot of debates and discussion. Now, another writer – this time from the former Eastern Germany – has a troubled past with the same SS. There are nevertheless differences: Erwin Strittmatter is dead, there will be no confessions or regrets; and, secondly, in Eastern Germany, that considered itself a champion in the fight against Fascism, it would not admit any participation in the fascist crimes.
