Summary/Abstract: The article raises the problem of teaching word-formation in Polish gimnazjum (junior high school). A selection of handbooks to teach linguistics in the third grade of education was analysed. The analysis presents that each of the authors of junior high school handbooks treats the syllabus in an almost free way, therefore discrepancies in the contents and terms which are defined differently appear. Some of the handbooks discuss word-formation with too much detail, which makes them almost academic, while others mention only briefly the issue and do not provide all the information relevant to the students. A proper choice of examples for word-formation analysis also appears to be problematic. Some of these examples are impossible to interpret for junior high school students due to their limited knowledge in this area.
