Summary/Abstract: The article examines the formal characteristics of the relationship between film and city: the representation of movement, dynamics and crowd. As modern city and film were born almost simultaneously, big cities lent themselves as a suitable medium of expression for the film, while, at the same time, film became the most adequate medium of the representation of big-city-living. The results are the abstract city films of the twenties, those of German expressionism and French or Soviet avant-garde. By the same token, film and city go hand in hand in the more recent history of cinematography as well. The final part of the essay discusses the city-films and film-cities of modern film history.
