Summary/Abstract: Drawing on a sculpture by the Romanian sculptor, Liviu Mocan, I look at some of the issues arising that cause difficulty in couple relationships. These are phrased in terms of ‘barrier’ and ‘wall’ in relation to ‘bridges’ that facilitate dialogue and ultimately, change. The powerful physicality of the bronze sculpture is used as a metaphor for the strengths and blocks in couple communication. Insights from anthropological studies on ritual and rites of passage in relation to becoming a couple are included. Clinical vignettes support the thinking. This includes an example where the sculpture becomes part of a couple’s therapy. A theoretical framework is outlined at the end that links different levels of conceptualising behavioural and emotional activity in relation to bridging dialogues.
