Summary/Abstract: Ms. Głowacka considers the work of Sarah Kofman at the intersection of Holocaust testimony, feminist theory, and Western philosophical canon. Kofman, a French philosopher associated with deconstruction, survived the Holocaust hidden with her mother by a Christian woman, while her father perished in Auschwitz. Kofman’s deconstructive critique of the Western canon consists in retrieving philosophers’ lives from their texts (Nietzsche, Rousseau, Kant, Comte and others), with the focus on their relationships with their mothers. Kofman’s portrayal of her mother and of the Christian woman who hid her is dark and unforgiving, while she pays homage to her father and claims that her entire work stems from an imperative to bear witness to his murder. Glowacka argues that this silencing of the mother and taking on the legacy of the father has allowed Kofman to found her genealogy as a philosopher and establish herself within a traditionally male discipline.
