Summary/Abstract: Głowacka examines Jean-Luc Nancy’s critique of traditional, immanent conceptions of community through the lens of recent Polish art that reflects on the legacy of the Holocaust in Poland. She considers Nancy’s thinking about community as inseparable from his writings about art and representation. It is within this framework that she looks at several examples of Polish art with the focus on the motives of air, water and ashes. In turn, these artworks draw attention to the absence of reflection on memory in the philosopher’s work. Głowacka proposes, therefore, to augment Nancy’s conception of community as the inoperative being-with-others with the notion of remembering-with, that is, memory that is always embodied and emplaced, and which emerges in the space of community that we (do not) share with others.
