Summary/Abstract: The article, quite briefly, traces back the history of the object of morphonology, its differentiation as an independent linguistic branch of science and the development of morphonologic theory after Trubetzkoy. The brief historical review aims at correcting the widely spread opinion, that after its creator's death morphonology has become "Trubetzkoy's orphan" and at pointing out the need for updating the methodology for description of the alternations of Bulgarian grammars.
