Summary/Abstract: Stolac, a small town in southern Bosnia, had one of the greatest concentrations and diversity of cultural heritage in the region, until it was systematically destroyed in the late twentieth century. The rehabilitation of this heritage has been an integral part of the complex process of the return of refugees and displaced persons, civic reconciliation, the exercise of human rights, the establishment of the rule of law and defining post-war development plans. The state of the heritage in Stolac since the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and people’s attitudes towards its rehabilitation may serve as a model for understanding the role cultural heritage plays in the complex social processes taking place in war-torn communities.
