Summary/Abstract: The subject – matter of the article is a play King Ubu (Ubu Roi), written by a controversial French writer Alfred Jarry (1873–1907). The action of the play, in which one of the protagonists is a bear, takes place in Poland and Lithuania. The question may arise why the author chose Lithuania for the background of his story and why he decided to include the image of a bear. The interpretation is based upon the genesis and analysis of the play by using the principles of structural analysis and comparative imagology. The aim is to reveal “logics and truth” (Jean-Marc Moura) of the image of Lithuania that is created by Jarry.
