Summary/Abstract: The Christology of the Eastern Fathers, especially of St. Cyril of Alexandria, was taken up and further developed by the Scythian monks on the basis of the dogmatic teaching of the Fourth Ecumenical Synod of Chalcedon. The Christology of these monks became the model and content for Emperor Justinian’s theology of Christ’s compound hypostasis. Through his theology, Justinian showed his competence and status as a great theologian, assuming and developing the Chalcedonian Eastern tradition. By his theology and his important role, Emperor Justinian greatly contributed to the life of the Church.
