Summary/Abstract: The tectonic movement which took place in the global economy, in the context of the current financial crisis, draws our attention in the direction of the increasingly important role the “emergent powers” have in the global politics, mainly due to their spectacular economic growth compared to the modest one of the industrial powers. The success of the emergent powers was acquired through a “selective de-coupling” of their strategies and economic policies from the Washington Consensus, which channels the activity of the World Bank and the IMF. The pragmatic and flexible policies of the emergent powers give to the poor countries new patterns of economic growth and, at the same time, lay the foundation for a multi-polar world.
