THE MYSTICAL WEDDING OF EASTERN AND WESTERN IN THE KAHLIL GIBRAN’S GOSPEL

Summary/Abstract: Le rapport de l’Orient à l’Occident est au cœur de l’esthétique et de l’éthique de Khalil Gibran. Il prend une dimension autant spirituelle qu’universelle car il s’inscrit déjà dans la vie même de l’artiste qui a quitté son Liban natal pour se retrouver à Boston puis à New York où il déçoit son entourage en devenant peintre et écrivain. Sa réflexion sur la dialectique subtile qui articule les deux cultures lui permet de régénérer la langue et la littérature arabes tout en spiritualisant l’idiome et l’imaginaire américain. Il démontre ainsi l’imbrication de ces deux pôles qui apparemment s’excluent mais finalement se complètent pour le juste équilibre du monde. Il célèbre ainsi les noces alchimiques du Jour et de la Nuit desquelles jaillira la lumière du monde. Il s’agit alors bien de la proclamation d’une bonne nouvelle. The relationship between East and West shapes the heart of the aesthetics and the ethics of Kahlil Gibran works. It takes a spiritual and universal dimension because it is already a part of the life of the artist who left his native Lebanon to arrive in Boston and New York, where he disappointed his entourage becoming a poor painter and writer. His conception on the subtle dialectic which articulates the two cultures allows him to regenerate the Arabic language and literature while spiritualizing the idiom and the American imagination. It demonstrates the interweaving of these two poles which apparently mutually exclusive but complementary to finally balance the world. It celebrates the alchemical wedding between Day and Night from which light of the world will spread. It’s a real proclamation of a gospel.
