Summary/Abstract: Natalia Manur is the main character of The Man of Feeling, a novel published by Javier Marías in 1986. The novel raises the problem of the eternal love triangle, Javier Marías’ favourite theme. The environmental determinism is present, as it is in most novels of the 19th century. The main character leads a life that resembles that of women in the past, and sadness eats her away from the inside. She is suffering like Emma Bovary, and Ana Ozores. Natalia Manur’s illness is called Bovarism, a term used by French philosopher Jules Gaultier in order to describe the marital frustration of Emma Bovary.
