Summary/Abstract: The case of Turkey as a state aspiring to the role of a regional power, while not unique from the comparative perspective, has special importance in the context of transatlantic and European relations. The picture is pretty exceptional, reflecting a complex tangle of domestic economic modernization, evolution of the political system towards a non-liberal democracy, impasse in EU membership talks, presence in NATO and regional ambitions. Transforming Turkey’s previous traditional relations with global powers and with Europe into a policy suitable for the ambitions of a regional power in statu nascendi will be neither simple nor conflict-free.
