Summary/Abstract: The theory that I shall seek to elaborate here puts considerable emphasis on linguistic problems that make language inadequate to define rights and obligations, the opportunities offered by multilingualism as it is organized in the EU context, and the multilingual legislation of the EU. The paper generates insights about the legal language of the EU, the opportunity for inconsistencies among the various language versions, and the nature of multilingual law and legal language.
