Summary/Abstract: Béla Galgóczi and András Tóth take forward the consideration of the automobile industry which Lubos Vagac undertook for Slovakia in our July issue. They look at how the industry in Hungary has been re-shaped during the transition, under the impact of foreign direct investment, and redirected into a qualitatively different type and mode of production. The successful transition of the automobile industry, which is now experiencing growth following a period of severe contraction in the early 1990s, has, to some extent, been reflected in the adaptation to the new conditions of Vagas, the engineering trade union representing members in the automobile industry. Many problems do still exist, largely as a result of the triple channel of employee representation, but Vagas has at least become more aware of the need for active organising initiatives in order to ensure the survival of trade unionism.
