Summary/Abstract: In Romania, the liberalization of the railway system in 1998 is considered successful by many people, at least from the point of view of operators, not less than 50 transport licenses being released from 2000 until present, most of them until 2004. The national operator, CFR Marfă, is still a superior presence on the railway freight transport market as compared to the undertakings which have recently accessed the market, but loses ground year after year. If in 2003, the national operator CFR Marfă had a market quota which exceeded 90%, in 2009, the national operator holds a market quota seriously approaching 50%.
