Summary/Abstract: From the beginning of the 1990s. the phenomenon of unemployment is located in the heart of many scientific disciplines. The article is its description by selected socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, education, formerly occupied status on the labour market, the right to the allowance for unemployment benefits) and variables reflecting its internal stability (streams flow and drainage to/from unemployment, time of being in this kind of population). We are interested in the level and dynamics of changes in these characteristics and their influence on the variation of intensity of unemployment during the considered period. This analysis will allow to test the following hypotheses: in the last two decades the variables describing the intensity and structure of unemployment are similar in shape to pass and the level of unemployment which is observed during the period of volatility is mainly due to the changing in the share of unemployed without the right to the allowance. In assessing the impact of these characteristics on instability of unemployment we will use a linear function of the trend, which will be chosen for each of these variables separately. Having the information on the extent of matching empirical data to theoretical function, we assess the impact of each of them on this variability. The information used in the analysis comes from the current registration carried out by the labour offices. Conducted deliberations did not prove the arguments from the analysis. For most of the characteristics that describe the shape of the unemployed population their course in time differed substantially from the level of unemployment and the greatest impact on its variability over the considered period had a share of the unemployed from the younger age groups, relatively poorly educated and not being able to cope on the constantly changing labor market.
