Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the meaning of work in Japanese culture. It examines the formation and the development of Japanese work ethic from the period of modernization till now. The analysis concentrates on the following problems: the influence of religion on work morality; workaholizm as a typical phenomenon of Japanese cultural uniqueness; the role of the family in the process of cultivation of work values and morality; the power of collective spirit and the work motivation. It also studies the changes in the different generations value systems of work in the context of the socio-economic development of Japanese society.
