THE PRONUNCIATION OF THE ALVEODENTAL CONSONANT L AS U IN CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN MEDIA SPEECH

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a survey on a phonetic phenomenon in Bulgaria, namely, the widespreading incorrect articulation of ў (w) instead of the alveodental consonant l in every position of the word excluding the position before front vowels. The focus is on the pronunciation of the consonant l as ў (w) in modern Bulgarian media speech. An experimental survey has been conducted monitoring a number of national and regional media: БНТ 1 (Bulgarian National Television), BTV, Nova TV, TV Черно море Варна (TV Black Sea Varna), БНР Програма Христо Ботев (Bulgarian National Radio Programme Hristo Botev) and БНР Радио Пловдив (Bulgarian National Radio Plovdiv). The articulation of l was observed among 16 presenters of news broadcasts, sports news, commentary and youth programmes and advertising within the period of 11 May 2013 – 11 February 2014. The results aim at defining the frequency of the articulation of ў (w) instead of l. This kind of incorrect articulation is perceived as correct by the audience.
